6 Reasons Private Swim Lesson are Worth the Cost

If you have price shopped swim lessons, I'm sure it didn't take long to feel that private swim lessons cost more than group lessons. Why pay for private lessons when you can pay half the cost and put your child into group swim lessons. Your child can instead enjoy lots of chit-chat time while sitting on their wall with their swim buddies.

Today I'm going to share with you 6 reasons why private swimming classes are worth the cost.

First- let's shift our mindset from swim lessons are an expensive cost to they are an investment in your child. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 and second leading cause of death for children under 14. You are investing in their future and safety around water, particularly when you are not around. Imagine all of the added peace of mind you can enjoy when you bring them to a pool party knowing they will excel in the water? Now that is priceless if you ask me. As an instructor it brings me so much joy when I receive referrals because my 3 year old student swam LAPS at the pool party while the other kids all bobbed in their puddle jumpers.

Let's look at just some of the reasons why private lessons truly are worth the investment:

30 Minutes of Swim Time vs 5-7 Minutes in a Group Lesson

In private lessons, your child will spend the majority of their lesson swimming. Unlike in group swimming lessons where students spend more time on the wall waiting for their turn.

So while you had paid more for the lesson, your child has also swam more than they would in a group lesson.

Save Time

If you have a pool (or access to one) the instructor will come to you saving substantial time carting the kids to and from lessons. This is a win-win because you will not have to add travel time AND your child a comfortable environment to learn to swim. From personal experience, all of my private lesson students have learned to swim 2x as fast (sometimes even faster) than students in my group lessons.

Flexible Lesson Plans

Flexible Swimming Lesson Plans

If you have enrolled your child in group lessons, have you noticed that even though your child can swim halfway across the pool and the other students can only swim a quarter of the way that the majority of the lesson is only having the students swim half way? Group lessons adhere to the schedule even if a child is ahead of the lesson plan.

In private lessons, there is a huge benefit because the instructor does not have to follow a lesson plan or keep all of the students performing the same task. He or she can take your child to the next task immediately. This means your pre-school child could be swimming the same distance as a 5 year old in a group class. The difference is in the 1-1 interaction. The lesson will be crafted to meet YOUR child needs, not the needs of the group.

More Scheduling Flexibility

Often group lessons meet twice a week. You will pay for every lesson whether or not your child attends class. Do you need 4 lessons a week or are you only able to have one lesson a week? With private lessons you are able to schedule them around your schedule and you r needs. This can be a huge relief to your well-being and schedule!

Build Confidence

1-on-1 swimming lessons

With the 1-1 attention, the instructor is able to push your child a little farther than could be possible within group lessons. This empowers your child that they have accomplished a new skill, swam across a pool they never thought possible and even dove to the bottom without assistance!

Safety of Your Child

Have you dropped your child off at a pool party and then left? I’m guessing that is not the case if your child can’t not swim on their own. Investing in private swim lessons gives more flexibility to go beyond simply swimming back to the wall.

I’ve had many students that transferred from group lessons into private lessons and while they could technically swim, their parents were not comfortable because they lacked the survival skills. Private lessons have the ability to better adapt to the individual student and teach life-saving skills that may have been overlooked in a group swim class whose main goal was to see the child kick their feet or swim 10’ unassisted.

These are just a few reasons. The main reason I see the cost of swimming lessons at home to be worth the investment is that 1) your child will learn to swim faster 2) the lesson plan can be adapted minute by minute to meet YOUR child’s need and 3) the convenience of scheduling lessons around when works for you (including nap time and snack time).
