Throwing a pool party for a group of kids can be a lot of fun, and easier than you’d think. Here are some ideas to help you throw a pool party that will be the talk of the neighborhood for some time to come.
Start With a Theme
While we hesitate to be politically incorrect, the fact is that when kids are very young, you can’t go far wrong with a pirate party for boys, or a princess or Little Mermaid theme for girls. Older children might like a beach party or luau theme. Your theme determines most of the rest of what you’ll do, from party favors to invitations and food. Sticking with a theme is actually a great idea if you typically have trouble making decisions – you know you’ve got to stick with the theme, so your choices are going to be limited.
Decorations
When it comes to decorations, your best friend is going to be your local dollar store. You can get so much for so little! Of course you’re going to need balloons and streamers, and be sure to pick out a few things that fit your theme. As an example, for a beach party, scatter seashells and use plastic sand pails and shovels as containers and serving utensils for food. Use your imagination!
Invitations
You could invite people via email, Facebook, or phone, but wouldn’t it be more fun to buy or make your decorations? You can’t very well stick to your theme if you’re phoning or emailing. You can get invitations at party stores, department stores, or again, the dollar store.
Food
You’ll have a bit of flexibility here. Who knows what pirates eat? Mermaids either, for that matter. Young kids will most likely be happy with whatever you provide. Older kids can be consulted. Of course you’ll want to provide a cake that’s decorated to match the theme of the party.
Games
This is a pool party, so of course most of the fun will take place in the pool. Older kids will probably want to be left to their own devices. Younger kids might duck races or traditional games like Marco Polo. A piñata is always a great idea for younger kids, and you’re sure to be able to find one that will fit your theme.
Be Safe
Make sure that you have sunscreen available so that you’re not sending home a bunch of crispy critters. As the host, you’re not likely to be able to keep your eyes on the pool at all times, so you’re going to need some help with that. You might have plenty of adult supervision at your event, but a simple distraction can break down that line of defense. Most pool deaths – 75%, in fact – occur during planned group swimming activities. In other words, they happen at pool parties. When preschoolers drown, 70% of them are in the care of one or both parents, and 75% of them are out of sight for under five minutes.
