Having a child put their face in the water is an important step in swim lessons that will help a little swimmer progress into a strong independent swimmer.
This can be a scary process for the parent watching closely as their child is experiencing swim lessons for the first time. However, it is an essential step in preparing the swim student for learning how to swim and when done correctly by professional instructors, your child will think it’s fun.
Here are some of the steps and skills that an instructor may use to prepare a child for their face to go under water.
- Get the Face wet- This is one of the very first steps that an instructor may take. They will ask the child to get their face wet themselves in the pool.
- Splash- Splashing is a great way to get the student to relate to the water and pool experience in a fun way while helping them to get completely wet from head to toe.
- Blowing Bubbles- This skill helps ease a child into getting use to the water being near their face as well as holding their breath and controlling their breathing.
- Water on the head- Another technique that could be used is dripping water over their head. This is to ensure that the child is not startled or scared by the feeling of water on their head.
These are some of the common techniques that our instructors use to help get a young swimmer get use to water near the face. These steps are extremely important in the process because it helps the child prepare for the bigger steps like going under water and holding their breath.
